Ten Essential Things to Do in Greenland

Greenland (CC Pixabay)

By Jonathan Williams

If you are still undecided about making that trip to Greenland, do not let the harsh cold dissuade you from visiting because you will surely miss out on a lot of wonderful things unique only to Greenland. In fact, now is the best time to visit Greenland because scientists predict that in a couple more years, a large part of it will have already melted and its brilliant glaciers and bergs will only be part of its history. Aside from those mentioned, here are some ten things that you need to see and do in Greenland.

1.) National Museum

When visiting any country or city for the very first time, it is always a good part of the itinerary to include its National Museum. In this particular museum, you will see the mummified bodies of what is believed to be those of the people who died when their boat turned over back in the 1400s. You can also find here other artifacts as well.

2.) Festival of Snow Sculptures

This is an annual festivity attended by locals and foreigners. Here, you will see a magnificent showcase of some of the world's best snow sculptures on parade. Go to the country's capital, Nuuk, to witness this yearly event.

3.) Greenland Tours

In order to fully enjoy your stay in Greenland and see as much as possible during your trip, it is best to take guided tours that will take you to Kangerlussuag and then to Ilulissat. These tours will take you around the cities. Here, you will experience native life in Greenland including the traditional welcome coffee drink from a local.

4.) Hiking and mountain climbing

One of the best hiking and mountaineering experiences you can ever have is in the mountains of Greenland. The best place is said to be Ice Cap. However, you should always have an experienced guide with you as you can easily get lost or injured if you don't know your way around.

5.) Qaqortoq

This is located in the southern part of Greenland. This is where you will find the oldest recorded fountain of the country as well as old building structures, and these buildings go as far back as two centuries ago. You will also see here a mini Eskimo Museum.

6.) Dog sleds

What is a visit to Greenland without trying its famous dog sledding down its icy slopes? Skiing is also a must. You can go skiing across the country provided you have a guide, and you are well-versed in the sport.

7.) Disko Bay

It is said that one iceberg here can weigh approximately more than 6 million tons! One of the most breathtaking sights you will ever witness here or perhaps anywhere in the world is the sun touching the icebergs illuminating their brilliance. Be prepared to be enthralled by this magnificent sight.

8.) Old Town Museum

This is located in Upernavik. It is a place considered to have a friendlier climate than most places in Greenland. The Old Town Museum houses historical mementos of the country including those about the earliest people who have inhabited the place.

9.) Polar Bears

Definitely not to be missed, polar bears are only seen in the cold regions, hence, they are a sight to behold in Greenland. Although fiercely wild and can seriously injure anyone he comes across with, the sight of this white bear is enough to entice any tourist to catch a glimpse of this wild animal. You will surely be amazed at the power and beauty these animals possess.

10.) Musk ox and other animals

After polar bears, tourists also come to this icy country to catch glimpses of musk oxen. You can also see in Greenland a few of Santa's reindeer and walruses. Whales are also abundant including the majestic white whales.

Are you curious about this popular holiday destination? Here are all the things you ever might have wanted to know about Ibiza:

Where is it?

Ibiza is located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Valencia in Spain. It is within an autonomous community of Spain known as the Balearic Islands.

How big is the island?

Tiny! It’s only about 15 miles wide. This is a great advantage to travellers because it means that you can easily explore the whole island within a short holiday. All the main attractions are situated within a 10-15 minute drive from San Antonio and Ibiza Town.

How many people live there?

Ibiza has an official population of 132, 637 people, but of course these numbers swell during the high point of tourist season, with the influx of visitors to its shores.

What is the climate like?

Hot, hot, hot! People choose Ibiza villas for rent if they want a holiday with plenty of sunshine. This is because the average temperature in the summer months is between 20-25 degrees Celsius and there are over 2,700 hours of sunshine per year!

You’ve heard correctly! Ibiza is considered the party capital of Europe, if not the world. The island’s capital of Ibiza Town and the town of Saint Antonio is the epicentre of the all-night-long dance parties that this island is famous for. During the summer months, top DJs perform at the clubs and live music festivals bring big-name bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, The Prodigy, and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Is Ibiza only for young party-goers?

No! This beautiful and peaceful island has plenty of family friendly beaches and activities to entertain mom, dad and the kids. If you are seeking a romantic getaway, Ibiza has that as well with fine dining, romantic secluded coves, sailing trips and private Ibiza villas for rent.

Greenland Crossing Expeditions and Ice Cap Crossings

Greenland (Creative Commons Pixabay)

By Jenny Andrew

The development of new areas by Greenland expedition groups from Great Britain has resulted in much more travel, exploration and ascents in the Kronprins Frederik Bjerge, the Lemon Bjerge, the many peaks round the Kangerdluassuaq Basin, the Watkins Bjerge, and areas behind the Blosseville Coast such as the Rignys Bjerg mountains, Lindbergh Fjelde, the Gronau Nunatakker, the mountains of Knud Rasmussen Land and the remote peaks of the aptly named Camp Icefield. Further north still, within the Greenland National Park area, more British groups have been very active climbing in Goodenough Land, Louise Boyd’s Land, the Martin Knudsens and Niels Holgersens Nunatakker and Dronning Louise Land, A major factor in these recent developments since the early nineties has been the role of Paul Walker and his logistics operation, Tangent Expeditions International, which by co-ordination of air operations has facilitated access for many expeditions into these more remote areas during the 1990's and 2000's.

Further south, the Schweizerland region continues to be a major draw for Greenland expedition groups with continuing development of high standard rock climbing, and increasingly the seeking out of big wall climbing as seen in the Fox Jaw Cirque above Tasiilaq Fjord, and on prominent peaks like Tupilak by the September 16 Glacier. The Staunings alps too, continue to exercise their hold on those seeking demanding alpine climbing. These trends seem likely to persist, alongside a growing interest in ski-touring and ski-mountaineering. Many previously unclimbed and unexplored mountain ranges still exist throughout east and northeast Greenland, containing literally thousands of remaining unclimbed summits.

The last few years have also seen the first signs of development of winter Arctic mountaineering expeditions in Greenland, an exciting and challenging prospect. In March 2004 Paul Walker led an international team of climbers who attempted the first ever winter ascent of Gunnbjørnsfjeld, the highest mountain in the Arctic at 3,693m. Forced back by temperatures in the -40's and strong winds and frightening windchill on the summit ridge it will no doubt only be a matter of time before this, and numerous other peaks, begin to attract and receive true winter ascents. Indeed Paul Walker and Team Tangent returned to the mountain in March 2006 to make a successful winter Greenland expedition attempt from the north side of the mountain. Thus, although Greenland’s many and varied mountains lack the altitude of the Himalaya or the Andes, their remoteness and likeness to Antarctica, and the promise of new ascents will go on attracting those who search for the rewards of exploration and attainment of new mountaineering experiences as the 21st Century marches on.

Most ice cap expedition routes cross the Greenland icecap from Isortoq to Kangerlussuaq for two simple reasons …. ease of access and price. To embark on such a major polar journey is indeed a privilege and a great achievement. Some leaders continue to support, guide and offer unbiased advice to all those who wish to take part in these expeditions. However there is much more to the ice cap crossing than just one straight line route. There are numerous, alternative Greenland crossing routes across the glacier, with far more exciting starting points in remote and largely unclimbed mountains ranges further north and up the east coast.

Holiday Loans: Worth enjoying a vacation

By James Roy

Every person has a desire to spend some of his or her free time with his or her family. Even we have left the nomadic life long after the development of abodes, but we feel like relaxing or going for a small holiday once in a while. We dream of spending vacations at an exotic place. But spending time with your family enjoying holidays could be expensive. You would certainly require a great amount of money to enjoy the dream as this cannot be fulfilled out of a fixed salary scale that is where some holiday loans come into the picture! These loans are very economical.

These are small but helpful cash advances which are offered to the people who want to spend their free time or vacations. The loan amount is not fixed as it depends on the credit position of the borrower. This loan amount is usually granted for a short span of few weeks only. These loans are offered in both secured as well as unsecured way. In the secured ones, you have to vow your assets with the lending institutions while in another case, there is no such requirement, but it has a demerit. Loans without collateral are offered at the higher rate of interest and for a shorter span of time.

You may also apply for such over the Internet. It is the easiest and fastest way to get the money approved. Just do a small research and visit any lending institutions r banking websites and apply for a holiday loan via filling an online form. It takes a while to get a loan approved which may take one day to a week. As a borrower, one should always do a research on interest rates and facilities provided. These loans are easy to get and economical too. You must be above 18 years of age while applying for this loan and you should have a continuous income flow as it is a mandate. Refreshment is equally important as important is your work. Enjoy the vacations but do not forget that timely payment of loans will not only add to your credit rating but it will make sure that you do not end up paying a huge amount!

Making the Most of Your Tropical Vacation

Flickr Creative Commons / Pedro Fernandes

One of the best ways to escape from it all is to book yourself and your companions a tropical vacation. There is nothing quite like spending a long weekend, or even longer, relaxing on a sandy beach. The best part about vacationing in a sunny tropical location is there are so many things to do and enjoy.

Things to do on a Tropical Vacation

One of the first things that people think of when planning a trip to destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, the Caribbean, and Cabo San Lucas is the beaches. Typically it is the beaches that attract tourists to these destinations. There is much more to do than just sit and relax on the sandy beaches and go swimming. Here are just a few other things that you and your traveling companions can do while on a tropical getaway.

- Surfing - This is one activity that is perfect when the surf is at its best. If you cannot handle surfing, body boarding is a great alternative for those that do not want to swim.

- Snorkeling - A great activity when you want to be in the water but do not want to worry about getting a certification or diving too deep into the water.

- Scuba diving - For the more adventurous at heart, scuba diving is a great activity. Divers get the opportunity to see things those sitting on land, in boats, or just swimming cannot enjoy. Having a certification and the correct equipment is important if you and your companions want to enjoy this water sport.

- Boating - this is an excellent activity if you want to be out and the water enjoying the views.

- Whale watching - This is possible from the coast in some locations, otherwise there are whale watching boat trips that venture out into the ocean.

- Fishing - When you are not in the water sometimes catching fresh fish is a great way to spend part of your vacation in a sunny local. Be sure to check with local rules and regulations prior to setting out to get the catch of the day.

- Swimming with dolphins - This is not an activity that can be done everywhere, but when possible this is a lifetime experience everyone should try once.

- Land activities - Volleyball, Frisbee, sun tanning, picnics

Vacationing in a sunny location is great because of the countless activities you can enjoy. The above are just a few of the things to do that will help you make the most of your tropical vacation.

Tropical vacations are a great way to unwind from life. Make sure to participate in activities like swimming, scuba diving or snorkeling to make the most of your trip.

The Essence Of Adventure

Flickr Creative Commons / Frontier Official

By Tony A Grayson

Do you like to take vacations? Where do you go? Depending on your answers, you will tag yourself somewhere in a range between the cautious traveler and the thrill seeker. There is nothing uncool about being anywhere on the range. Folks tend to take vacations that fit their age, experience, temperament, judgement, and budget. Also, a thrill seeker who has a young family with children, will be impeded by responsibility, so it evens out.

What is the essence of adventure? I define it this way: It is an adrenaline rush of exhilaration, an experience that combines freedom with vulnerability precisely when a spark is fired by sheer terror! If you survive it, you will have a hair-raising memory that you will share with other people for the rest of your life. If you are harmed by it, you have my sympathy.

I cannot fit examples of my adventures into this article, but I can tell you how to have your own adventure. Play Airport Bingo (Railway Bingo, Cruise Ship Bingo, Taxi Bingo), a game in which you and your favorite person snag two discount tickets, a bargain basement savings to fill in an otherwise empty pair of seats. Then, just go! Don't even pack a suitcase! Realize the power of this. Those tickets are the way to go everywhere. The fact that you don't know where you are going until you spontaneously buy them is the thrill!

Suppose that you chicken out. After all, you have no luggage, no guaranteed place to stay when you get to your impromptu destination, and you can think of dozens of reasons not to do this. But, you do have your favorite somebody to share the experience, and figuring out what you will do is like finding the pieces of a puzzle. You live in the now. It is easy to chicken

How to Connect With Locals While Traveling: Eat More Local

Panama Local Market (Flickr Creative Commons / LYWang)

By Laura LaBrie

I love to sample new foods and I love to try things that are very local. Hojaldres, for instance, are Panama's equivalent to fried dough and when served with breakfast make you feel like you are getting eggs at the fair.

There is a tendency for travelers to eat at places that look clean and have a nice ambiance. Occasionally those places are fun to visit because they offer high-end foods that appeal to the tourist's tongue. But they are usually expensive and, in all honesty, don't always offer the best food.

Little local joints typically don't look the cleanest from the outside and in some cases look down right terrifying. I am fearless when it comes to trying new places to eat, but occasionally I have paid a very dear price for my bravery.

Once I stopped at a little restaurant in Mexican Rivera Maya, just south of Cancun. It consisted of two plastic tables sitting outside a tiny cement home. Two people were sitting there, but they had the appearance of being family. I figured it would be a great way to meet people and try something local at the same time so I took a seat at the red plastic table and ordered a bowl of seafood soup.

Big mistake.

The soup looked so interesting. It had fish and squid and shrimp and clams along with yucca and carrots and potatoes and right in the middle of the bowl was an oyster still in the shell. Often soups in Central America have bits of things in them that require a little work to get at. An ear of corn that needs to be picked up and nibbled or a piece of pork that is still on the bone. So I happily attacked the large sea shell and ingested its contents.

To this day I do not know if it was the oyster inside the shell or the fact that a possibly unwashed shell was in my soup that had me running to the bathroom for the next 2 weeks. Either way, the results were less than desirable.

So how do you find good local food in a manner that you can be pretty sure won't give you similar results?

Look for the crowd.

The locals don't want to get sick any more than you do.

Places that don't have a big turn over of customers have food lying around in less than ideal conditions and that makes for less than ideal conditions in your stomach. Local people know where to find the best deal with the best food for sure. But they also know where to find food that won't make them sick.

Central America is a wonderfully free place with less regulations and rules to stop people from opening their own little businesses. And that is great because it allows for a small family to open up a eatery with a minimum of fuss. That does however mean that the kitchen may be a little less than sanitary or the food may be less than fresh.

So follow the locals. Go where you see the crowds. You can even stop at someone's table and ask what they recommend on the menu. They will be excited you asked and feel honored to give their opinion.

When I lived in Mexico we used to go to a little seafood place in La Colonia (the poor part of a famous and dear-to-my-heart fishing village). It was packed most of the time. Again, there were red plastic tables. But this time there were people coming and going and talking and laughing and slurping soup everywhere.

The first time we sat down I leaned over and asked a handsome Mexican man wearing a nice button up shirt what was the best thing on the menu. He recommended the seafood soup. I'd already had some experience with sea food soup as I mentioned earlier.

But I was unafraid (well mostly unafraid) so I ordered a bowl. Again, I found a bowl with shrimp and fish and squid and clams and I think this one had octopus too. This time it was served over a huge mound of rice and topped with fresh slices of avocado and lime. I added a little hot sauce (it kills bacteria. I bet you thought the Mexicans just like their food hot) and dug in.

Splendid!

That little restaurant became my favorite La Colonia joint for the next year and a half and I got to know the owner, his brother, and many of the people who lived in the town just by stopping by to slurp down a bowl of soup.

I learned my lesson.

Follow the Crowd.

History and Tranquillity in Lloret de Mar's Santa Clotilde Gardens

Flickr Creative Commons / Richard Clifford

By Desiree Michels

Drenched in history and bursting with hidden gems, Lloret de Mar has so much just waiting to be discovered, particularly if you are looking for something a little bit different. For anyone just arrived and looking to explore some of the more out-of-the-way places, the Santa Clotilde Gardens are the perfect place to start.

The Gardens in Brief

Sitting proud on a breezy cliff top, the gardens offer some fabulous views over the coastline – ideal if photography is a passion, or even if it isn’t! Perfectly manicured hedges cut into wonderful shapes line the slopes, and the stunning green staircase is set off beautifully by the sculptured marble mermaids that decorate its edges.

Blessed with refreshing breezes, the gardens are the ideal spot to escape to in the afternoons when you crave tranquillity and respite from the beach.

A Little History

Inspired by the Noucentista movement in Catalonia, the gardens were designed in 1919 by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí, who also worked on the famous Gardens in Barcelona. Epitomising the gardens of the Italian Renaissance, Rubió combined a sense of rigidity with a refined grace to bring his concept to life.

This project was a chance for the young Rubió to branch out and express his own creativity. He put aside the Spanish-Arabic influence to which he had been exposed when he worked on the Montjuïc gardens with his teacher, Forestier, and instead set out to incorporate the spirit of the Italian Renaissance, which he did beautifully in his inclusion of fountains, sculptures and ponds. Every aspect of the gardens is a fine example of the way the artist synthesised his artistic prowess with nature’s powerful aesthetic, and today the gardens stand justly independent of their surroundings.

As you explore you will be guided by the symmetry and definitive pathways that culminate in ornamental features. Terraces and interlocking walkways shape the gardens and add to its romantic intention. For anyone with a desire to spend some time relaxing and appreciating a different side to Lloret de Mar, this place is perfect.

Where

The Santa Clotilde Gardens are located on Paratge de Santa Clotilde, 17310, Lloret de Mar.

When

From April to October the gardens are open from Monday to Sunday between 10am and 8pm. From November to January they close at 5pm, and from February to March they close at 6pm.

Cost

The gardens costs €5 per adult and €2.50 for any concessions, such as pensioners, students, and disabled people.

Himalayan Full Moon

Himalaya (Flickr Creative Common / Bernard Goldbach)
By Andrea Scarsi

It is midnight, and full moon on the Himalayas, and the cold kills. I cannot adapt to the climate. The wooden walls of my room are a miserable shelter and my feather sleeping bag is too warm and transpiring. I am sweating in it and the slightest air current makes me shiver. It is my mania to avoid anything synthetic. I decide to go down to the hot springs. A small one is nearby, in the center of the village, tiled with large flat stones and bounded by a circular wall of smaller ones, about an arm's length. The diameter is approximately five meters and there's never anyone; they all go to the biggest one at the village entrance. That hot water spring welcomes you when you arrive, after crossing an endless rope-bridge teetering over a sacred river descending loud and rushing into a deep gorge. When you walk over it, stunned by the noise, you see the road carved into the mountain on one side and inviting warm waters on the other. They're very hot indeed, contained within a single masonry construction. All the rest is wood.

The air is very cold, the moon triumphs, and the pitch darkness is the backdrop with thousands of pulsating stars. I take a deep breath and feel like dying. I go, alone in the street, shaking in my yak-wool jacket and pulling my local hat down to my ears. I can see the fumes of the baths from afar, inviting, and I already breathe the delicate scent of sulfur. All around, above the dark shape of the houses, the giant profiles of the mountains. I leave my slippers out and enter the circle. Heat and humidity are very pleasant and revive me. It's a dark outdoor place, surely revitalizing for my skin and numbed lungs. I take off my jacket to sit on hot plates, and enjoy the night, moon, loneliness, altitude, and finally heat. What a place, what an atmosphere, what an unknown and unimaginable magic. I would stay naked but you never know how many eyes are watching you hidden in the dark of night. There is too much moonlight to sleep. All around is peace, but inside me there is always something that grinds deep and makes me always feel uncomfortable. Time stops and so do I, in unstable balance, crushed by the night that does not move. I close my eyes and listen to the sound of water flowing beneath me.

I hear the sound of footsteps and see Rita arriving. She takes off her slippers and approaches, sitting down beside me. She feels cold too and presses against me for a few minutes. We look into each other's eyes; silence is too dominant to say anything, we're both pure perception pierced by reflected moon rays. We fill a pipe and smoke it slowly, savoring the taste, the burning fire and thick smoke coming out of our dragon's mouth. It's becoming more and more magic this October full moon. It's getting hotter and bit by bit we strip off our cloths, until we're finally naked, reckless and heedless as always. Her skin is white, faintly silver, her curves slender and delicate, her eyes bright and smiling and a cascade of black curls cover her shoulders down to her breasts. Her pubic forest dominates, undisputed and inviting, and we get lost in a sublime tangle of love. A bit timid, a bit hesitant, I come inside her. She's happy. We lie embraced over our clothes. The night is softer now, gently enveloping, and after an infinite time, comes an endless dawn. The ritual is complete, in the Valley of Gods.
